A Slippery Solution!

Did you know that a can of Watkins Cooking Spray in your cupboard has other uses you may have never considered? You can spray it on measuring spoons before measuring sticky foods like molasses and honey and they will easily slide off. You can also spray your knives before chopping dates or other dried fruits. Also, it can be sprayed on cheese graters to prevent the cheese from sticking.

Grandma only used Watkins quality Cinnamon...

...in her pumpkin pie and banana bread, continue the tradition with award-winning high-oil Korintje cassia cinnamon. Our cinnamon contains 3.5% essential oil, while many others on the market contain only 1 to 2%, and inferior brands as low as .5%.

Facts, Tips & Ideas to Save You Money!

  • Watkins Baking Powder is "double-acting" - so what does that mean? That means that the leavening gases are released once on contact with moisture - and then again during baking. This double-rising feature results in lighter, higher and fluffier cakes and baked goods. Watkins Baking Powder is aluminum free which is great for you since aluminum has been linked to many health ailments - such as Alzheimers and even some cancers.
  • Watkins Baking Cocoa does more than you think! In recipes calling for unsweetened chocolate, substitute 3 tbsp/45 ml of Baking Cocoa plus 1 tbsp/15 ml unsalted butter for each 1 oz/30 g of unsweetened chocolate; to equal one 6-oz/170 g bag of semi-sweet chocolate morsels, substitute 6 tbsp/90 ml Baking Cocoa, 7 tbsp/100 ml granulated sugar, and 1/4 cup/60 ml solid vegetable shortening. But don't stop there - unsweetened cocoa is a terrific addition to chili! This may seem a little strange, but chocolate actually has a long tradition of similar uses in Mexico!
  • Watkins Snack & Dip Seasonings are convenient and versatile! Mix with regular, lowfat or nonfat sour cream, puréed cottage cheese or plain yogurt for a variety of dips; thin with buttermilk for cream salad dressings; add to cream cheese for appetizer or bagel spreads or even a deliciously different cheese ball.

  • Watkins Chai Tea is guaranteed to be just about the BEST tasting Chai you've ever had! It's a blend of black and green teas so the caffeine level is lower than most Chai's you will find elsewhere - and the flavour is such that if you do go back to your "other" brand after trying Watkins, you will come back really quickly! Watkins Chai Tea along with a handy Infuser make a wonderful gift idea. Add it to a basket with a large mug, a good novel and a warm, snuggly lap blanket!
  • Watkins Liquid Spices are definitely not only a 'money-saver', but a flavour booster! Only the pure extract of garlic, ginger, onion and chipotle are used and infused into a grapeseed oil base. And talk about concentration - one teaspoon/5 ml of our Garlic Liquid Spice is equal to EIGHT cloves of garlic!! Do you know someone who loves garlic bread? Team up a bottle of Watkins Liquid Garlic Spice in a rustic basket with a loaf of Watkins Good Tastings Bread Mix and a bottle of wine!
  • Watkins Meat Magic is perfect for anyone you know who like the more 'exotic' or 'game' meats. It not only brings out the natural flavours, but it also helps to retain more of the natural juices as well so the meat will be tenderer. This would make a wonderful gift when teamed up with a selection of Watkins Gourmet Peppers and Pepper Blends! ... and speaking of ...
  • Watkins Gourmet Peppers and Pepper Blends - did you know that many 'pepper' blends you find on store shelves contain salt??? It's true! At Watkins, we don't need to 'enhance' the flavour of our peppers - they are superb all by themselves!!

Soup Bases - Versatile!

If you've never tried any of the Watkins Soup and Gravy bases, you need to! They might look similar to any old can of soup, but these are NOT the same as typical condensed soup that makes one or two servings. These are dry mixes, that make up to 50 servings or more. So they are very economical. Plus, they have so many uses for flavoring all kinds of dishes other than soup and gravy.

You can get these Soup and Gravy Base flavors:

* Beef
* Cheese
* Chicken
* Cream
* Mexican
* Mushroom
* Onion
* Six Onion

And these two Gourmet Gravy Bases:

* Country Gourmet
* Roasted Turkey

Additionally, Baked Potato Soup is part of this year's Seasonal Favorites line.

Here is how your fellow associates use these bases:

* I don't make much soup, so this may sound strange, but my favorite Watkins cooking products are the soup bases. I use them for so many things, sprinkling on chicken when I bake it, simmering it with rice, tossing it in with roasted potatoes. The uses are endless, and the results make the simplest dish seem like you really know what you're doing.

* I love the Chicken Soup mix! It got my kids to eat veggies after my mother-in-law used it in the cooking water.

* One of my favorite products is the Beef Soup Base. Before trying this product my children would not eat roast and after several days we would have to throw away left overs. Now we're lucky to get one meal out of a roast with my kids.

* The Mushroom Soup Base is a huge time saver for making homemade spaghetti sauce. Instead of cooking my sauce of hours I know add a few tablespoons of Mushroom Soup Base. It thickens my sauce and adds a lovely light mushroom flavour that even my picky step-daughter can deal with.

* My single most favorite product is the onion soup. I like being able to fix a cup of good soup instantly. My favorite soup is a pack of ramen noodles (throw away their seasonings), some pepperoni (turkey is best, less fat) and two teaspoons of the onion soup. It's delicious and ready in a couple of minutes.

* I take a bag of frozen green beans or green peas and I mix in 1 Tbsp of butter/margarine, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, 1 Tbsp splenda (or sugar if you prefer), a couple shakes of Garlic Liquid Spice, 2 Tbsp of water and 2 Tbsp of the Six Onion Soup base, then microwave for about 5 minutes, and sprinkle with Minced Green Onion right before serving.

* We have a customer who's step-dad recently had part of his tongue amputated due to cancer. Due to the chemo, his taste buds are about shot. My customer said that she needs more Beef Soup base, that she is almost out. You see, the only thing that the family found that "dad" will eat is our Watkins Beef Soup Base, because, it is the only thing that he can taste and he LOVES the flavor.

If a recipe calls for a "cream" soup, like cream of mushroom or cream of chicken, just whip up one of the Watkins bases according to the "gravy" directions, which would typically be about the same consistency as a cream-style soup.

The jack-o-lantern on your doorstep may do more than just scare away a few ghosts. . .it may scare off cancer, too! Pumpkin is rich in beta carotene and other carotenoids that help your body fight cancer, including breast cancer, and help prevent cataracts. Beta carotene can also be converted to vitamin A—when the body needs it—which boosts the immune system and is essential for healthy skin and vision. Watkins All-Natural Pumpkin Butter will provide nearly 100% of your daily requirement for Vitamin A. Now, that should get you pumped!

Don't Spoil a Good Thing!

Spicing up your foods not only makes them taste great, it can also help to reduce the presence of bacteria such as E. coli, and slow the spoilage of leftovers. In studies, garlic, onion, allspice, clove, cinnamon, sage and oregano were found to have the greatest antibacterial benefits, killing off most of the bad bacteria present in foods. Thyme, tarragon and cumin were also very effective. While researchers caution that foods must still be cooked to the proper temperature to prevent food-borne illness, it's clear that a sprinkling of spices can help keep bacteria at "bay" and preserve your leftovers for a longer "thyme." Watkins offers over 50 herbs, spices and seasoning blends, including Poultry Seasoning with sage, onion, garlic and other spices that can help to keep your Thanksgiving leftovers from going foul.

Healthy Eating with Watkins!

Since 1868 Watkins has been enhancing the lives of North American families.
Our mission is to continue this tradition of quality, trust and value
as we head into our 3rd century of business.

Here are some great (and simple!) healthy eating tips - the Watkins way!

  • Reduce coffee intake to 2-3 cups per day. Slowly work on eliminating cream and sugar from your coffee. Instead, flavour your coffee with Watkins Cinnamon or one of our many great Extracts, such as Vanilla, Vanilla Nut, Black Walnut, Butter Pecan, Butternut, Chocolate, Raspberry or Rum. Drink more Watkins healthy Mint and Lemongrass or Vanilla TheraTea blends, too!

  • Use Watkins healthy Grapeseed Oils instead of butter or margarine whenever you can. Create a healthy alternative to butter or margarine by blending 1/2 Original Grapeseed Oil with 1/2 butter for a delicious and healthier spread. Try Garlic and Parsley Grapeseed Oil and butter for an exciting taste sensation!

  • Sauté foods with Watkins Liquid Spices. You'll be using the healthier Grapeseed Oil and adding great flavour, too!

  • Rather than using butter on cooked vegetables, sprinkle with your favourite Watkins herbs such as Cilantro, Minced Green Onion, Dill, or Basil - remember, just a light sprinkle is all it takes with Watkins pure Gourmet Spices and Seasonings!

  • Instead of adding oil or butter to rice, cook it with a little Watkins Chicken or Onion Soup Base. Great flavour with no fat!

  • Use Watkins Garlic and Dill, Bacon and Cheddar, Bacon and Onion, Tomato and Bacon or Cucumber and Dill Dip Mix with no-fat sour cream or yogurt for an excellent baked potato topping - tastes great with perogies, too!

  • For healthy low-fat garlic mashed potatoes, leave about 1/4 of your potatoes unpeeled (this adds colour and "character" to your dish); while they are boiling, sauté fresh minced garlic cloves (or 1 tsp. of Watkins Garlic Flakes) in 2 tbsp. Watkins Garlic and Parsley Grapeseed Oil. When potatoes are cooked, drain and then mash in the garlic, skip the butter, use skim milk and about 3-4 tbsp. of low or no fat cream cheese. Sprinkle generously with Watkins Black Pepper. Fabulous!

  • Instead of adding salt to soup, add Watkins Lemon Peel or Watkins Lemon Pepper Blend - extra flavour without the extra sodium!

  • If water isn't your favourite drink, flavour it with a drop of your favourite Watkins Fruit Flavoured Extract and add ice! We highly recommend our delicious new Mango Extract - mmm!

  • Make your own "home fries". Wash potatoes and slice into strips. Precook in microwave oven on High for 5 minutes. Toss with 1 tsp./ 5 ml of Watkins Garlic and Parsley Grapeseed Oil and bake in 375ºF / 190ºC oven for 15 - 20 minutes. For added flavour, sprinkle with Watkins Seasoning Salt or your favourite Watkins Salad Seasoning Blend!
